Please don’t think that because I am giving Don Jon a good review means you need to run to the theater right now and see it. Seriously, you need to be completely aware of what you are getting yourself into – an hour and a half of self and societal reflection centering around pornography.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper) puts everything on the line, writing, directing, and starring in a movie a lot of people would not have the guts to have a singular role in. As Don Jon, JGL fully expressed a character we have never really seen him embody, a self-centered, antagonistic guy.
He says, “There’s only a few things I really care about in life. My body. My pad. My ride. My family. My church. My boys. My girls. My porn.” This line completely encapsulates what the movie is about. JGL directed the film as a routine. He hangs out with his bros. He has sex with some girl. He masturbates to porn. He goes to confession. He has dinner with his family. And he says his Hail Marrys while working out at the gym.
I personally found the whole movie completely refreshing. Scarlett Johansson’s (The Avengers) character shows how manipulative people can be, while Julliane Moore’s (Crazy Stupid Love) character shows what it means to actually care about someone. Inner beauty trumps a “Dime” any day.
