I have never been able to get into NASCAR racing, and honestly had never even heard of Formula 1 (F1) racing, but Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon) has sparked my interest. However, the problem I still have with both of these racing leagues is the fact that you have to sit through way too many laps to get the payoff of the race.
Therefore, I think I am going to stick with watching racing in the movies (AKA Rush, Fast & Furious, and Aaron Paul’s new movie Need for Speed). Before it was even released, it was obvious that Rush was going to receive a lot of award hype. When Ron Howard isn’t screwing around with books and religion, he knows how to make a solid movie.
Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) and Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Bastards) bring out the best of F1 racing with amazing performances embodying James Hunt and Niki Lauda, respectively. By focusing on the film’s main characters as both protagonists and antagonists, Howard crafts a very unique story arc.
Both Hemsworth and Bruhl have the chance to be the hero and the villain over and over again as the film progresses towards its climax. They are both best friends and perfect enemies in 2013′s sports movie of the year.
